The Year 2000 Silva Bay Fishing Derby was held May 20th, 21st and 22nd. Winning the largest chinook prize was Nanaimo resident Paula Sandland who caught a 19.3 pounder. She received $500 first prize from Silva Bay Marina and a beautiful trophy donated by Bob Smith. Nanaimo fishers were well represented by Del Crowe, Dane Christiansen, Brad Brown, Keith McDonald , Craig Brezden, Danny Bishop and Bill Mullin. As a convenience for Nanaimo residents, we added a weigh scale at Sealand Tackle to save them having to run to Silva Bay. The derby was well attended by Vancouver boaters including regulars Jim and Maryanne Munneke, Derek Hardy, Sony Nelson, Bob Bengough and Hans Auer. Derek recorded the second largest chinook at 18.5 pounds and Jim took 3rd place at 17 pounds and also released the largest chinook at 30”.
Gabriola entries were down this year, despite enormous preliminary enthusiasm. Perhaps it was the spotty fishing or cool weather. Part of the fun of the fishing derby is yacking on the VHF with old friends. We missed visiting with Vic and Shiela Hiebert, Ernie and Linda Rushworth, and Dave O’Neill. Due to circumstance, they were without boats at the time of the derby.
Many thanks go to Silva Bay Marina for their continued sponsorship of this event. Thanks also goes to GTO Radio for their excellent hourly coverage of the derby and to our ticket vendors: Silva Bay Marina, Pages Marina, The Boatel, Sealand Tackle and the Harbour Chandlers. This event couldn’t have been done without our sponsors: Silva Bay Marina, Village Foods, Ozzy’s Marine, Coming Up!, The Coffee Bug, Bob Smith, Sports Fishing Institute, Harbour Chandler, Canadian Tire, Midland Tools, Sealand Tackle, Yellow Bird Arts, G.W. Distributors, Anchorage Marina, and Marine Parts Supply.
$750 was raised for the Sport Fishing Institute as it continues to be an excellent voice for the sport fishermen.
